Who We Are
How We Care for Spaces
Amano Gardens is a non-profit social enterprise rooted in care for green spaces and for people.
Through our work, we create meaningful employment opportunities for individuals navigating barriers to entering or staying in the workforce, including language, life transitions, or gaps in traditional employment pathways.
Our team works entirely by hand, tending to each space with attention, consistency, and respect for the natural systems already in place.
Our role is to translate vision into something the space can truly sustain.
By working at the intersection of intention and environmental conditions, we shape gardens that are both expressive and enduring.
Our work is grounded in long-term care, supporting soil health, plant resilience, and seasonal balance through thoughtful, non-chemical practices.
Every garden is treated as a living system. Through consistent, hands-on maintenance, we support its ability to sustain itself, adapt, and grow stronger with time.
Where We Begin
Every project begins with an on-site walk-through.
We visit the property to understand it as a whole garden, garden beds, soil conditions, lawn areas, existing plant material, light exposure, drainage, and overall structure.
We take the time to observe what is already there: what’s thriving, what’s struggling, and what has the potential to be strengthened or brought back to life.
We work from what the space holds, its soil, structure, and existing plant material, using
that as the foundation for all decisions.
This can mean reinforcing and refining what is already there, or moving into more substantial
transformations, including full bed reworks and new planting directions. Our role is to guide that process in a way that feels cohesive, intentional, and built to last.
From there, our work continues through ongoing care with regular reassessment, soil support, and thoughtful adjustments that allow the space to evolve naturally over time.
WHY IT MATTERS
Healthy green spaces do more than look good, they support biodiversity, improve urban environments, and create places where people can slow down and connect.
At the same time, our work creates meaningful, dignified employment, building skills, stability, and a sense of purpose through hands-on care.
For us, the work is never just about the garden.
Every space is different.
The best place to start is together.
Land Acknowledgement
The spaces we care for today exist because they have been cared for long before us.
Amano Gardens operates across lands that include the traditional unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Anishinàbe Algonquin People. We approach our work with respect for the land, its history, and the responsibility that comes with tending it. We honour the generations of stewardship, knowledge, and care that continue to shape these lands today.
